Ideas definitely worth spreading

I had the pleasure of attending Newcastle’s first TEDxNewy event on the weekend. Ideas flowed on a range of topics and from different industry sectors.

Enigma was a Leadership Partner and provided these funky little animations, which played before each speaker’s presentation.

Enigma is also editing each presentation and loading to the TEDx YouTube channel in the next few weeks.

I particularly enjoyed Marcus Westbury of Renew Newcastle’s presentation. I’m a passionate Novocastrian and Marcus’ approach to reviving our struggling city centre is close to my heart.

Renew Newcastle is a not-for-profit company that has launched more than 70 new creative projects in more than 40 once empty buildings in the Newcastle CBD since 2009.

Many of Marcus’ comments resonated with me and got fellow attendees and me thinking.

‘Start with what’s easy and lower barriers to entry’.

‘Building to an economic formula doesn’t create vibrancy’.

Other topics included: Dying in the 21st century, the challenge of making stroke sexy and questioning how our world became so plastic.

The most entertaining presentation was from Mark Jackson and his ukestra – a band of passionate local ukelele players. See the Ukastle Ukestra practising for their Australia's Got Talent audition below.

ABC Radio Newcastle got involved on the day and asked attendees to capture their ideas worth spreading in six words or fewer. Check out the responses here.
